Through education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, community building and outreach, we strive to advance the interior design profession and, in the process, to demonstrate and celebrate the power of design to positively change people’s lives.
We lead interior designers in shared conversations around topics that matter: from evidence-based and human-centric design to social responsibility, well-being, and sustainability. We showcase the impact of design on the human experience and the value interior designers provide.

Founded in 1975, ASID is the oldest, largest and only multi-disciplinary professional organization for interior designers, interior design students and the manufacturers and suppliers who support the profession.
The rich, vibrant history of the organization goes back to the founding of its predecessor organizations, the American Institute of Interior Designers (AID) and the National Society of Interior Designers (NSID).
ASID is governed by an 11 member Board of Directors. These volunteer leaders are responsible for strategic direction and financial oversight of the Corporation including policy development, nominations and elections and recruitment/contract management of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). It is an enormous responsibility that requires experience in volunteer leadership, a passion for the profession, and the time and dedication to serve in this capacity.
The annual call for Nominations is open to members of the design community who may or may not be ASID members. The call for submission is issued every Fall. Board terms are three years and run from October 1-September 30 annually, which is ASID’s fiscal year. Meet the ASID Board of Directors; a group of industry thought leaders and visionaries who meet face-to-face four times per year and up to six times per year via teleconference. The Officers of the Corporation include our Past Chair, Chair, and Chair-Elect.
To support the Board and staff, ASID invites members and other individuals from the interior design community to join one of several committees, councils, or task forces. We rely on this volunteer leadership to ensure our programming supports today’s challenges and opportunities.

ASID’s CEO, Khoi Vo, ASID, IIDA, CIDA, IDEC, IDECF, is responsible for the day to day management of the Corporation and implementation of the Association’s Strategic Plan. Vo leads a team of 26 individuals in the Association’s corporate headquarters in Washington, D.C. Vo is the voice of the organization and the profession.
ASID’s staff team operates within nine business units including Executive Office, Administration, Strategic Programs & Partnerships, Government & Public Affairs, Research & Knowledge Management, Education & Engagement, Membership & Chapter Services, Industry Partnerships, and Communications & Marketing.
ASID is grounded in our annual Strategic Plan. Our 2021-2024 plan has four core values that focus on Design Excellence, Thought Leadership, Advocacy and Community.
Most importantly, we are inspired by our Vision Statement.
In principle and in practice, ASID values and seeks diversity and inclusive practices within the interior design profession. ASID believes diversity makes organizations more successful and communities more fulfilling. By actively cultivating a diverse community of professionals, we benefit from a vastly richer mix of ideas, perspectives and life experiences that expands our thinking and our possibilities. ASID promotes involvement, innovation, and expanded access to leadership opportunities that maximize engagement across identity groups and professional levels. ASID believes that Design is an intrinsically human-centered profession and must have a positive impact on people, communities, and the environment. We recognize that the Interior Design profession has an obligation to minimize our environmental impact and move towards regenerative design. In order to advance design excellence within all professional disciplines of Interior Design and industry partners, ASID supports a focus on three tenets of design excellence: Climate, Health and Equity.
Climate: Interior Design has a role in reversing the negative impacts of climate change by focusing on eliminating emissions, designing for adaptability and resilience, and reducing resource consumption while supporting a circular economy.
Health: Both human and ecological health are essential components of a thriving society. Interior Design must create spaces that support holistic health by focusing on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of occupants, responsible material specifications and protecting threatened ecosystems.
Equity: Social and environmental equity play a vital role in the development of cohesive, safe, and resilient communities. Interior Design should be an instrument for the integration of diverse populations by creating opportunities for community cohesion that address inclusion, accessibility, and fair trade.
The design profession must evolve to better address the pressing environmental, human health, and social challenges facing the world. By addressing the tenets above, ASID members have the power to transform the built environment. Interior Design is part of a larger ecosystem of roles, and collaboration between disciplines is imperative to drive change. ASID will support our member’s efforts through promotion of educational programs, tools, and advocacy for public policies, and endeavor to forge strategic alliances as part of a multi-disciplinary effort.

Our research team provides economic, sector, career stage and, of course, design data and research to the marketplace. Through the ASID Foundation, we provide over $100,000 in funding annually to various research and scholarship initiatives to help build the knowledge community for the interior design profession.
We offer career stage programming that focuses on the Impact of Design, the Business of Design, Leadership Development and Health & Wellness. We offer both online and in-person engagement opportunities. We also offer study prep courses for the WELL exam and seminars for principals/owners interested in learning about business transition. “
Our government and public relations team works at the state and federal levels to represent your interests as an interior design professional AND as a business owner. Our first priority is right to practice –whether that be through interior design legislation or seal/stamp privileges at the municipal level.
