Interior design is currently undergoing tremendous change due to developments both within and outside the industry. New technologies, increased requirements for design decisions to be supported with quantitative data and research, the growing complexity of projects, higher expectations for design to perform on multiple levels and to deliver on outcomes, and the emphasis on the impact of design on the environment, occupant behavior, and well-being are challenging designers in new ways and expanding the scope of practice, all within tighter timelines.
To learn more about how these changes are affecting designers, we interviewed industry thought leaders from across the spectrum of practice and conducted a series of focus groups with leading designers that represent a wide range of backgrounds and experience. In this brief, we report on how these changes are impacting the career path for designers and presenting them with new opportunities.
